◇発表題目◇
Parental socioeconomic status and peer group influence on children’s nutrition awareness and food choice in Ibadan, Nigeria

◇発表内容◇
Child malnutrition is a recurring global phenomenon, with children in low- and middle-income countries and poorer household in particular bearing the greatest burden. As reported in our previous study (Adeoya et al. 2023), school lunches are largely unregulated in Nigeria, and meal menus are usually left to the discretion of individual vendors, forcing students to choose their meals without supervision. Most Nigerian parents with children attending public elementary schools belong to low-socioeconomic-status households, and being students, the children spend a substantial time at school with their peers. This study investigated parental socioeconomic status and peer group influence (PGI) on children’s nutrition awareness and food choice in Ibadan, Nigeria. Using pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental study design and multi-stage sampling techniques, nutrition education intervention was given to randomly selected primary 4 and 5 students. Results indicated that despite adequate knowledge of nutrition, the constraints of low socioeconomic background remained a practical barrier to healthy eating for children. Peer groups influence students' behavior as they struggle with food choices under the judgment of their peers at school.

◇今回の発表によって得られた成果及び問題点◇
This presentation highlights the dilemmas faced by children in public elementary schools regarding food and nutritional choices and recommends that school meal service be nationalized in all elementary schools in Nigeria.

◇今後の研究目標及び課題◇
My future goal is to publish the results of this study as a full article in a relevant journal. And lending my voice using this empirical evidence to join in advocating for the nationalization of school feeding service for elementary school students in Nigeria with adequate funding, monitoring, and evaluation, as obtained in Japan elementary schools.
